Hummel Hummel Bar
The "Hummel Hummel" Bar
Bar Hummel Hummel was born in the early 1990s inside the famous Yumbo Center in Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria, thanks to a German couple originally from Hamburg.
The name of the bar is a tribute to an old popular greeting: “Hummel Hummel” — a typical expression used in the ports of Hamburg after the war, especially among water carriers.
A simple phrase, yet full of meaning, tied to identity, daily effort, and community. That was the spirit the founders wanted to recreate in their bar.
For more than fifteen years, Hummel Hummel was the most important gay bar in the Yumbo Center, especially loved by a predominantly male clientele over 50 and their admirers.
The venue was spacious, lively, and also known for its large dark room running through the bar's interior, lively music, and a relaxed, no-frills atmosphere. It was the place where the night began… and often ended.
Around 2010–2011, the original owners decided to sell the bar. After being closed for one or two years, Hummel Hummel reopened in 2013, maintaining the same name and spirit, but with a much smaller space: about one-third of the original size. Part of the original venue was sold to what is now the Eden Bar, although Hummel Hummel remained true to its identity, even if the crowd wasn’t as large as before.
In 2023, there was another change in management. The new owner, Italian, brought fresh energy, enthusiasm, and a strong will to invest — without altering the soul of the bar.
In 2024, he undertook a complete renovation of the space, modernizing it and adapting it to today’s needs.
Today, Hummel Hummel is a clean, welcoming, and fully renewed bar, featuring a brand-new dark room, much larger than in recent years, and a room dedicated to XXX films, designed exclusively for a male audience.
Another important upgrade was the addition — for the first time in the bar’s history — of a toilet specifically for female guests.
Until 2024, women had to use public bathrooms outside the bar; now they can also enjoy greater comfort.
During the renovation, the owner decided to involve a longtime friend and colleague: Dimosthenis Prodromou, a Greek artist from Volos, known for his collage work but also active in painting and mixed media.
All the artworks currently displayed on the walls of Hummel Hummel are his creations.
Dimosthenis is also part of the bar’s staff, so anyone interested in learning more about the pieces, their history, or purchasing them, can simply ask one of the team members — or the artist himself.
